What are Spiritual Gifts?
Spiritual Gifts are special abilities given by the Holy Spirit that are used to minister to the needs of the body of believers . There are many different gifts listed and described in these chapters of the Bible: Romans 12; Ephesians 4; 1 Peter 4:10, 11; and 1 Corinthians 12.
Each person receives a gift different from another, and some people may receive more than one. However, one gift is not superior to another, as all spiritual gifts come from the same spirit , the Holy Spirit, and every gift's purpose is to build up Christ's body, the church.
Why should I know my gifts?
According to 1 Corinthians 12:12, "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ (ESV). " The body of Christ, the church, and its believers is one body with many parts. Each part has a specific function that is necessary to the body as a whole. Therefore, just as the body has many unique parts, so does the church of Christ. Each member are different for a reason, and in their differences they must work together in order to fulfil God's work on earth through them.
Every believer is a special part in the body of Christ as Paul affirms the importance of each member in 1 Corinthians 12:26: " If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honoured, all rejoice together (ESV)." This means that as Christians, we need to be serving in some way using the gift(s) we have been given to help the church function the way God intended it to.
In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus reminds us to use our talents in order to bear fruits that last forever, rather than bury them or keep them hidden. And our spiritual gifts, given to us by God through grace., plays a significant role in that.
